Point Cloud Shape Extraction

“A computer will do what you tell it to do, but that may be much different from what you had in mind” —Joseph Weizenbaum

Hi, guys!  Well, we are still in the throes of a very hot summer—but fall will be here before we know it.  Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine without too much discomfort, though, and although my heart goes out to those of you dealing with collateral damage, I’m particularly thankful that we on the Texas coast have not been inundated with the oily mess spinning around in the gulf.

Once again, I’ve been looking for some exciting information to share with you about Civil 3d and/or AutoCAD 2011, and I came across some interesting stuff in the Autodesk Labs with which you guys might have fun toying around.  Remember a while back, I posted something about Point Clouds and their usability in basic AutoCAD?  Well, Autodesk Labs have developed a plug-in for Point Cloud Shape Extraction.  I found some really great information on this development at http://autodesk.blogs.com/ .  There are some pretty impressive maneuvers with the additional ribbon and plug-in, and some valuable links for information on developing technology in the Autodesk Labs (http://labs.autodesk.com/).  The only requirement is that you provide some kind of feedback if you use the information—the more constructive feedback you provide, the better the development!

Take care and have a great week!
