Paperless Markups?  Easier than you think!

“I write down everything I want to remember. That way, instead of spending a lot of time trying to remember what it is I wrote down, I spend the time looking for the paper I wrote it down on.” — Beryl Pfizer

Recently, I had the privilege of attending an in-house lunch and learn regarding a software called Bluebeam.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with Bluebeam, it is similar to Design Review—only it has a lot more options and features than Design Review.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with Design Review, let me shed some light on it for you.

Design Review is Autodesk’s review and markup program, which can be downloaded free at the Autodesk website.  It allows the user to digitally review plans, add comments, cloud areas, make revision notes, and even measure accurate distances.  For the environmentally conscious amongst us, it is a great way to communicate changes and revisions to construction documents by way of a virtual paper trail.  In other words, you no longer need to print, highlight, markup, and reprint every time you need to make a change to your plans.

Now, in comparison, and for a very nominal price, we also have Bluebeam as an option.  Bluebeam was originally marketed as a tool used to batch plot PDF files.  However, Bluebeam has many of the features that Design Review has, and THEN some. For example, you can program formulas, calculate areas, and many other things using the Bluebeam PDF management program.   Bluebeam links markups internally—so they are dynamically updated when working on the review!  It also has the ability to archive the markups, storing them much as you would a complete file of all markups made to construction documents.  Imagine, the possibility of going paperless, but still having all of your markups in tact, with the ability to share multiple views at one time between reviewers (thus decreasing redundancy), and never having to worry about ‘where did that note go?’ while shuffling through a seemingly neverending stack of chronological markups?

Give it a shot.  Download a 30 day trial and see how you like the ‘paperless’ effect.  If you find that you would like to pursue it further, give us a call, we’ll be glad to help!

Until next time, take care and enjoy this amazing weather!
