Changes in Vault Server

May 26, 2015

For those of you using Vault as your data management tool, upgrading is going to be just a little different this time around…

With the introduction of the 2016 Vault Client, and Autodesk Data Management Server (ADMS), the server operating system and SQL will require upgrading. This will mean tight coordination between your I.T. teams and the Total CAD Vault implementation team. Planning is everything. Our recommendation; another server if possible, either VM or an actual temporary system. This will allow for an ADMS server to be built on the temporary system or VM thus providing tools to validate the Vault backups, and installation. Using another (temporary) server we can reduce the impact to the engineering offices. During updates to end-user applications AutoCAD, Inventor, etc. users can be pointed to the temporary server, and continue to work while the real (actual Vault) server is upgraded to the new operating system and SQL. It also allows for the building of the temporary server off-line from the engineering vault server eliminating the down time to engineering in the event of a bad Vault backup, installation failure or the Server op-sys upgrade does not go as planned.

I highly recommend that I.T. teams and engineering teams review the Vault 2016 System Specifications, the link below will direct you to that Web page.

Happy Vaulting
