Controlling the Text Height in a Point Table

June 14, 2013

Autodesk has a solution for controlling the text height in a point table.  You might have noticed that if you change the text height, you don’t get the desired result.  That’s because you need to change the table size instead, NOT the text height.

Adding Attributes to Your Point Label Style

March 19, 2013

We work with a lot of Oil and Gas companies that use Civil 3D as their main design software.  Most of these companies use extended descriptions in their ASCII files.  As many of you know, you only have the choice to use PNEZD or PENZD.

This can be achieved by adding User-Defined Property Classifications in the Settings tab.

The video below will take you step-by-step in creating this for your label styles…

Point Group from Point

February 21, 2013

I ran across a very cool Civil 3D add-in this morning on the Autodesk Exchange Apps; and it’s free!!

This app allows the user to quickly create point groups for survey points such as trees, catch basins and other features by right clicking each desired point to be made into a point group based on its description.

You can read about it and install it here.

Elevation Adjustment in a Survey Database

December 22, 2011

I get many calls on adjusting point elevations all at once in a drawing.  Most people try to adjust the elevation using the Datum method as shown below…

This method prompts you at the command line to adjust the datum by a value.  You enter a value and nothing happens.  This is because it’s in a survey database, hence, the reason for a survey database.

I’m going to walk you through the correct method in adjusting elevations in a survey database.

First you will need to pick a point as to which to do your adjustment from.  In this case we are going to use point number 504.

6-27-2011 3-12-14 PM

Notice the elevation for point 504 is 131.88.

We start by right-clicking on the Survey Database’s name and selecting Translate Survey Database…

This will open up a wizard.  On the first page, you have a few options for input.  All I am going to do is input the point number 504 and hit the enter key…

6-27-2011 3-12-14 PM

As you can see in the image above, once I hit the Enter key, it populates the Northing, Easting, Elevation and Description.  Click Next.

The next page prompts you for the rotation.  Since we are not rotating, and we are ONLY doing an elevation adjustment, enter 0 and press Next…

The next page prompts you for a destination point and elevation adjustment.  We are ONLY concerned about the elevation.  Here we are going to enter –2.00.  This will adjust the points down.  If you want to adjust them up, then you will enter a positive value.

6-27-2011 3-12-14 PM

Click Next.  The last page is a summary of the values we just entered.

6-27-2011 3-12-14 PM

Click Finish.

Here you can see the desired adjustment…

Keep in mind that this adjusted ALL my points –2.00 feet.

Everyone have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  I will see you in 2012!!!
